The environmental gradients upon which species and communities are ordained either steepen or smoothen at various times and places, thereby reducing utterly or broadening greatly that part of the ecologicla spectrum which offers the best opportunity to organisms of adequate valence.

As the gradient shifts from hill to dell -- now and again,
So the range it offers will shrink and swell -- here and there.
